Neurosurgeons at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital have extensive experience with the use of high field strength moveable intraoperative MRI — more than any other hospital in the United States. In the Neuroscience Center, more than 400 cases have been performed since 2008.
With intraoperative MRI, neurosurgeons have access to real-time MRI images in the operating room. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) enables neurosurgeons to see healthy and diseased portions of the brain. The use of this technology produces high resolution images that enable precise positioning for complex procedures.
This advanced technology is coupled with a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to treatment that brings together the specialized expertise of physicians representing the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, neuropathology, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and plastic surgery. The addition of intraoperative MRI enables the team to provide the most advanced care available anywhere to patients with brain tumors and other brain disorders.
