Neurosurgery residents win ‘Top Gun’ awards for surgical skillsEric Arias, MD, and Jarod Roland, MD, (shown at left and right in photo with Kristopher Kimmell, MD) both residents in neurological surgery, earned “Top Gun” honors at the 2016 annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).
Eric and Jarod, sixth-year and fifth-year residents, respectively, in the Department of Neurological Surgery showed their surgical skills in the 2016 Neurosurgery Top Gun Competition, open to all U.S. residents and fellows, which tests participants' abilities in five simulated tasks: lumbar pedicle screw, trigeminal rhizotomy, Myriad minimally invasive tumor resection, ventriculostomy and 3D navigation.
Together, Eric and Jarod won first place in the team competition.
Jarod received the highest overall score and was named the 2016 Neurosurgical Top Gun Winner. He was also the winner of the lumbar pedicle screw station.
Eric was the winner of the Myriad minimally invasive tumor resection station.
