PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
At Washington University School of Medicine, a multidisciplinary team of physicians from Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology coordinates the care of patients with all types of skull-base tumors including meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, schwannomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, glomus tumors, metastases and craniofacial malignancies. This team uses specialized therapeutic techniques including skull-base surgical approaches, Stealth computerized surgical navigation, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, radiation therapy and novel chemotherapy techniques to provide the safest and most definitive treatment available.
CONDITIONS & TREATMENTS
Skull base is a term used to refer to the region of the head at the base of the skull, beneath the brain. Abnormalities most commonly addressed at the skull base include tumors and abnormalities of the blood vessels of the brain. These abnormalities are often highly complex because of involvement of the complicated anatomy at the base of the skull. Tumors and vascular abnormalities of the skull base often require a team approach using the expertise of physicians from multiple specialties. We have assembled a team of these specialists who meet on a regular basis to address the management of patients with complex abnormalities of the skull base.
